Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 19th Century America) for Wednesday, January 17, 2024 (Season 40, Game 93):

An 1884 article calls this newly completed structure “the highest work of man” & disagrees with those who call it “a great chimney”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Patti Palmer, a retired teacher & bookseller from Tulsa, Oklahoma
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, January 17, 2024 (1)
Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, January 17, 2024 (2)
Devin Lohman, an architectural designer & Masters student from Peachtree City, Georgia
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, January 17, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After her triumphant performance in the first Season 39 Second Chance competition, Juveria Zaheer returns to the Alex Trebek Stage in Champions Wildcard. Today she faces off against Devin Lohman, who won just $1,200 in his single win in Season 39, and Patti Palmer, who won a single game before losing to ToCer Matthew Marcus. With Juveria’s performance having aired shortly before the taping of these games, I could absolutely see her opposition being intimidated by that. If not, though, I would say that absolutely anything can happen.

Completed in December 1884 and 555 feet high, the Washington Monument, was literally “the highest work of man”—its height surpassed the then-world’s tallest building, the Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, by 43 feet (as per the 1884 article). Per that same article, which was republished in newspapers throughout America in late 1884 and early 1885, “I do not agree with those who say it is nothing but a giant chimney. It is a work of massive, symmetrical, and wonderful immensity; and no man can view it without being filled with great thoughts of man and nature in their infinite possibilities.” The structure was overtaken in height by the Eiffel Tower in 1889.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: The Fist & The Furious Movies; Around The Globe; Born On Jan. 17; U.S. Stamps; Politics As Unusual; Inconvenient Words)

In an opening segment that saw our players have difficulty in the INCONVENIENT WORDS category, it was Juveria who picked up the early advantage, thanks to a True Daily Double! Another 8 correct responses after the interviews extended Juveria’s lead to $1,800 after 30 clues.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Juveria 5 correct 2 incorrect
Devin 4 correct 1 incorrect
Patti 4 correct 2 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Patti was the subject of a Rosie O’Donnell TikTok.
Juveria has a daughter with the nickname “Ken Jennings, Jr.” because she hosts Juveria’s prep work.
Devin ran a half-marathon, but trained for this one.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Juveria 13 correct 3 incorrect
Patti 9 correct 2 incorrect
Devin 4 correct 2 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Not To Be Confused; Alliterative Terms; Find The Fish; If Food Be The Love Of Music; Frailty, Thy Name Is Man; Summer Of Our Discontent)

Everyone except for Juveria herself—even Ken—were surprised by what happened on the 15th clue when she found the first Daily Double: she went all in! It was a good choice as her correct response broke the game wide open! She found the last one late in the round and bet much, much less. Needless to say, the score was a dominent runaway for everyone’s favourite Canadian psychiatrist (Canadian spelling of “favourite” used deliberately.)

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Juveria 30 correct 6 incorrect
Patti 13 correct 3 incorrect
Devin 9 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Juveria $32,800
Patti $7,000
Devin $6,400

Juveria was the only player correct in final, an exclamation mark on a dominant performance! She moves on to the semifinals!

Tonight’s results:

Devin $6,400 – $601 = $5,799 (What is the Brooklyn Bridge?)
Patti $7,000 – $7,000 = $0 (What is the Eiffel Tower? Hi, Girls! <3)
Juveria $32,800 + $8,000 = $40,800 (What is the Washington Monument?) (Semi-Finalist)
