Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Landmarks) for Monday, January 1, 2024 (Season 40, Game 81):

213 feet wide, this late 18th c. European structure has 5 portals, the middle of which was—at first—for royals only

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Christopher Pennant, a sports journalist & announcer from Chicago, Illinois (Friday’s total: $16,000)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, January 1, 2024 (1)
Xanni Brown, a post-doc researcher originally from Cincinnati, Ohio (Friday’s total: $29,600)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, January 1, 2024 (2)
Greg Czaja, a cardiologist from San Diego, California (Friday’s total: $35,200)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, January 1, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Happy New Year! 2024 begins today with a big day in the world of Jeopardy!—in North America, we’ll be seeing the final game of Week 2 of Second Chance. Greg Czaja picked up $35,200 on Friday, but Xanni Brown also has $29,600—it’s still very close and still anybody’s game. Christopher Pennant with $16,000 sits third and will need to play much more aggressively to have a hope of making a come-from-behind victory today.

It’s also a big day for fans of the show in the United Kingdom, as ITV is debuting the new UK version, hosted by Stephen Fry. UK Jeopardy! will be airing today at 5:45 PM GMT (12:45 PM EST) before setting into its normal time slot of 4:00 PM GMT (11:00 AM EST) tomorrow. (ITV’s coverage of the New Year’s Day horse racing at Cheltenham is one major reason for their schedule changes in the UK today.)

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

If you’re looking for a quick rundown of what happened last week, I write a weekly recap column for Geeks Who Drink’s Questionist, released every Sunday. Yesterday’s column was titled “Quick on the Draw”. Questionist also has a newsletter that you can sign up for!

It should be noted that results on this site will be delayed for a couple of reasons today: first of all, coverage of the Rose Parade will be preempting the show in early ABC markets today. Secondly, the premiere of UK Jeopardy! will be airing at the same time as the early airings today—and, being only one person, I can only cover one thing at once!

Correct response: What is the Brandenburg Gate?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) was built as a famous western entrance gate to Berlin, Germany, built by King of Prussia Frederick William II after he realized that Berlin didn’t have the monuments that Vienna, Paris, or London did. The gate today is seen as a symbol of European unity and peace.

As somebody who has spent a lot of time recently playing Euro Truck Simulator 2 on my PC, I was actually disappointed when I realized that a major landmark such as the Brandenburg Gate wasn’t depicted in the game itself.

In terms of how I think this will play today: I could definitely see our players seeing “late 18th century” and “at first” and making a detour into France.

One thing that I’ll be interested in seeing today is how many people just Googled “213 feet wide”, saw a matching result for the Tower Bridge, thought “that fits European”, and then got mad online after they failed to realize that the Tower Bridge doesn’t fit the rest of the clue.
