John Bonsell - June 26, 1957 - January 03, 2023

Departed: 01/03/2023 (Council Bluffs)

Obituary Preview: John M. Bonsell,65,of Omaha. NE passed away peacefully at his home, January 3, 2023 after reaching his goal to ring in the New Year.

Johnny Mac was born June 26, 1957 to Roger and Beverly Bonsell of the O.W. Ranch north of Lusk, Wyoming. His childhood, along with his siblings, Billy, Bobby, Connie, and later Jimmy and Cory, was filled with exploration, discovery and mischievousness. At age eight, John's family relocated to Lusk where John delighted in knowing that the neighbors ate at different times. He ambitiously made himself welcome at their dinner tables.

After entertaining classmates through nine years of schooling, John discovered his passion in Industrial Arts. He graduated from Niobrara County High School in 1975 and later obtained his Master's Degree in Industrial Education from Chadron State College in 1980.

In a university career that spanned over 44 years, John molded many young, aspiring engineers. He came to the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Department at UNO in 1982 as an assistant professor after being an instructor at Chadron State Teacher's College. After a long and distinguished teaching career, John retired in 2020 from the Construction Management Engineering program of the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction at the Peter Kiewit Institute in Omaha. He taught a variety of courses in the manufacturing area (Site Safety, BIM, Surveying and Machine Tool Practices) and developed close links with local Omaha manufacturers. In teaching surveying classes, he became a well-known and visible presence on campus with his students' doing measurements. John believed students learn best by actively engaging in the process.

By designing and building the world class rapid prototyping laboratory in 1996 at UNO, Professor Bonsell played a pioneering role in meeting the Peter Kiewit Institute's goal "to help meet the needs of the nation's technology and engineering firms by providing a top-flight education to students interested in pursuing careers in information science, technology and engineering." Close friends and former students remember John for strongly encouraging them to look at issues or ideas from multiple angles, invariably, finding at least one that others hadn't considered. He had a passion for knowledge and an enthusiasm for sharing that knowledge whether you wanted to hear it or not. John not only focused on the intricacies of construction but in building relationships whether it was with students, or helping his neighbors, or getting to know the guy at Menards. He never met a stranger.

John will be remembered for his intelligence, his witty sense of humor, his uncanny ability to play practical jokes and his passion for waterfowl hunting. John's enthusiasm for setting out decoys, watching the sunrise over a marsh and calling to ducks on a cold, damp morning was extreme but he was most fond of his hunting buddies whom he loved to cook for and later criticize their cooking.

Of all the people he touched, and the accomplishments he obtained, his proudest achievement was marrying his childhood sweetheart, Dana C. Rust on July 25,1976. His bride of 46 years supported him in all his ventures and adventures but most lovingly supported him physically during his battle with long term complications of pancreatitis. Together, they raised two daughters, Chelsea and Amanda. John loved his family and had a strong desire to provide for them.

John is preceded in death by his daughter, Chelsea; his brother Bill and his parents. John is survived by: his wife, Dana; his daughter, Amanda; sister, Connie (Rick)Lewellyn, College Place, WA.; brothers: Bob (Tammy), Jim (Jessie), Lusk, WY; Cory (Nancy), Omaha, NE. and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Though our hearts are heavy, we will joyously celebrate his life and find comfort that he is in heaven watching over us. Services will be held at Southwest Church of the Nazarene (14808 Q Street, Omaha) on Saturday, January 7th at 3:00 p.m. (as to not interfere with waterfowl hunting.)

In lieu of gifts, a donation to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention would be greatly appreciated.

Jamie McQuiston - July 30, 1974 - November 07, 2022

Departed: 11/07/2022 (Council Bluffs)

Obituary Preview: Jamie Ann McQuiston Jamie Ann (Weidenhammer) McQuiston was born July 30th,1974 in Omaha, NE to Joy and Steve

Weidenhammer. She passed away surrounded by her husband & family on November 7th, 2022. Jamie came into this world about 1 month after her due date. She was born with a full head of hair and was basically already a month old. She was her parents' second child and they were excited to welcome her into this world. Jamie was just a delightful child. She was goofy and funny. Her family has many fond memories of "Jamie-isms" that made them all laugh. Hamming it up for photos was a specialty. She was always a sweet and kind girl. Maturing into a young adult, she kept the sweetness and kindness that most people who knew her admired and mentioned

about her. Her voice remained very childlike in tone and it was a distinction for her. Jamie was a 1992 graduate of Bonanza High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. She started college at the University of Nevada Reno, but moved back to Omaha in 1995. She enrolled in the

University of Nebraska and received a B.S. in Interior Design in May 1999. She and Cory met in 2006 and were married on October 13, 2012. They started their life together in Lincoln with Cory's young son Avery. They later moved to Holdrege, NE in 2021. Jamie enjoyed cooking, cake decorating, knitting (hats, scarves, and hot pads) and she was an avid reader. She adored animals. She and Cory had no children together, but had a houseful of pets: dogs Gizmo, Maddy, and Nova, and cats Phoebe and Daphne. Those pets were her "children."

Jamie loved and cared for all of them. She was also a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephew. She always had photos of them around

her home and visited them to celebrate their achievements when she could. Jamie had dreamed of working in a veterinary office and that dream came to fruition in the last

two years that she and Cory lived in Lincoln when she worked at the South Ridge Animal Clinic. She got the chance to rescue and be a surrogate mother to a baby kitten, Phoebe. It was a

dream of hers to have that opportunity. Jamie contended with health issues and complications from Type 1 Diabetes for most of her adult life. She persistently combated the ups and downs of being a diabetic, but her life was still taken

when we weren't expecting it. There was so much Jamie still wanted to do, including spending more time with her husband Cory and her beloved pets. Jamie had a passion for interior design, and she had been working

diligently to remodel their home in Holdrege.

We will all remember Jamie for her sweet voice, adorable laugh and raunchy sense of humor. She had the ability to make everyone laugh, especially Cory. Anytime you hung out with them together, they were always sharing funny stories and cracking each other up. They were truly each other's best friend and favorite person to be with Jamie was deeply loved by her immediate family, and her husband Cory lost a true soulmate. Her father Steve and sister Jody and her family are devastated. She will be deeply missed by the entire McQuiston & Weidenhammer families and all of her friends and people that she touched

during her shortened life. She is survived by her devoted husband Cory, her father Steve, her step-son Avery, her sister Jody Waters and brother-in-law Jeremy and their children, Dylan, Mackenzie, and Madison. Her father-in-law Mike McQuiston, mother-in-law Connie Poole, sister-in-law Amber McQuiston and a whole host of relatives and friends who loved and cherished this wonderful friend, wife, daughter

& sister.

We will love you & miss you forever.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help facilitate condolences, allow people to pay their respects, and provide closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. You may also include hobbies, achievements, or other personal details that celebrate the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload one or more photos of the deceased. This can help make the tribute more personal and meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required).

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow revisions or corrections, while others may not. Be sure to review your obituary carefully before submitting it.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Many people choose to write their own obituary as a way to have control over how they're remembered. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually without additional biographical information. An obituary provides more detail about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include details about preferred charities or memorial funds in lieu of flowers.

How do I find an old obituary from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites. Local libraries or historical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and records.

Check with the original publication or copyright holder to ensure you have permission to republish. You may need to obtain permission or provide proper attribution.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

You can still publish an obituary without including funeral details. Simply state that services will be private or by invitation only.

Can I include humor or lighthearted moments in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Feel free to share anecdotes or personality traits that celebrate the person's life.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately to report the error. They may issue a correction or reprint the revised obituary.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of a traditional obituary?

Yes! Online memorial platforms allow you to create a personalized tribute page with photos, stories, and memories of your loved one.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Dona€™t hesitate to reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or professional counselor for support. You can also consider seeking guidance from a funeral home or bereavement organization.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

Focusing on their accomplishments, passions, and values can help preserve their memory and inspire future generations.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Sensitivity and compassion are key when writing about someone who died prematurely. Focus on celebrating their life and acknowledging the impact of their loss on loved ones.

Yes! Social media can be a powerful tool for spreading news quickly and reaching a wider audience. Just be mindful of privacy settings and respect for the grieving family.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?
