Obituary Preview: Mary Louise Dahl, age 81, residing at Rose Vista in Woodbine, Iowa, returned to home to Jesus on August 8, 2023.

Mary was born on June 29, 1942 to the late John Paul and Marietta Doner. She grew up on a farm east of Hamlin with her grandparents, Floyd and Cora Doner. Mary attended Exira Community Schools and graduated in 1961. She was a steadfast farm girl, even after her family moved to Council Bluffs.

At the age of 25, she was united in marriage to Walter Clifford Dahl, a veteran of the Navy. From this union came three children, Dorothy, Larry and Judy. Mary lived a full life, often enjoying gardening, birdwatching, crafts, and "drowning a worm" (fishing).

Mary spent many years working in the food service industry, including for the Council Bluffs Community School District, Shoney's restaurant, Indian Hills nursing facility, and reached retirement at West Central Development head-start program. She also spent several years as a newspaper courier for the Daily Nonpareil and Omaha World Herald. Mary was active in the PTA, volunteered her time at the school as a homeroom parent and classroom volunteer, and was an active parent in her son's Boy Scout troop.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Floyd and Cora; her father and stepmother, John Paul and Ella Doner; her mother and stepfather, Marietta and Emil Doner; her two stepsisters, Joanne Larson and Janelle Stauffer; her husband, Walter Dahl; and grandson, Scott Crooks.

Mary leaves behind to mourn her three brothers, Clifford, Marlowe and William Doner; her three children, Dorothy Miller, Larry Dahl, and Judy Dahl; her daughter-in-law, Cathy Dahl; her cousins, Robert and wife Patricia Boydston, Steve Boydston, Mike Franks, and Maryanne Lawrence; her grandchildren, Carrie, Ryan and Dustin Miller, and Brandy and Nicki Crooks.

A reception in Mary's honor will take place on Friday, August 11, 2023 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM with a prayer and remarks at 6:00 PM at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Burial will be on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 1:00 PM in Exira Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: John Joseph Disalvo, age 76, passed away peacefully at CHI Health Mercy Hospital on August 6, 2023.

He was born November 20, 1946, to the late John L. and Dorothy J. (McDowell) Disalvo in Council Bluffs, IA. John graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and then proudly served his country in the United States Navy. John served on the Council Bluffs Fire Department and later worked security. He was also a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elk's Lodge #531.

John is survived by fiancée, Linda Queen; children, Samuel Disalvo and Daniel (Jeannie) Disalvo; step daughter, Melissa Queen; siblings, Mervin (Becky) Disalvo and Virginia "Ginny" (John) Case; grandchildren, Amelia Disalvo and Kiara Queen; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other family and friends; honorary sister, Memory (Richard) Mescher.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM with recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 09, 2023.

Obituary Preview: Constance "Connie" Wilson, age 72, passed away peacefully August 6, 2023. She was born April 5, 1951 to Darrell and Elvina (Templeton) Herweg in Kansas City, MO. Constance lived in Council Bluffs the majority of her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by spouse, Jerry Wilson and son, Morris T. Wilson.

Obituary Preview: Mike Lesley passed away suddenly on August 4, 2023 at the age of 57.

He was born on October 13, 1965 to Terry and Joyce Lesley.Mike graduated from Central High School in Omaha in 1984. He was a Print Manager at Physicians Mutual where he worked for 34 years.

Mike married the love of his life, Paula in 1999 and they have three kids that he absolutely adored (Jacob, Garrett and Maryn).

Mike was very involved in his kids’ activities. He coached them in baseball and on the weekends he would take them to the field to practice or to the driving range to practice their golf swing.

Mike was a lifelong fan of the Huskers and Phillies and he passed down his love for both teams to his boys.

Mike is survived by his wife of 24 years, Paula Lesley; parents, Terry (Georgianna) Lesley and Joyce Lesley; children, Jacob Lesley, Garrett Lesley, and Maryn Lesley; siblings, Wayne (Heather) Lesley, Jenny (Bryan) Doughman, Jill (Tucker) Lesley, Shelly (Jason Early) Lesley, and Heather Hawkins; nieces and nephews; a host of other family and friends.

Obituary Preview: Thomas Luther Helms Age 80 of Council Bluffs, Iowa formerly of Crocker, Missouri passed away on August 3, 2023.

He was born in Crocker, Missouri on August 22, 1942 to Marion and Alice (Davis) Helms. He graduated from Crocker High School and later from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Thomas married Faith Roloff and were together for over 58 years. They spent most of their life in Independence, Missouri. He enjoyed music, especially playing his guitar and was a board member at Messiah Lutheran Church.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Faith; sons, John and wife Alida and Luke and wife Beth; grandchildren, Julia and Emiliano; sister, Judy Drown and husband Donnie; brother, Danny and wife JoAnn; nieces; nephews and other family and friends.

Thomas will be laid to rest in the Crocker Cemetery in Crocker, Missouri.

Obituary Preview: Bruce K. Turner, age 90, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023. He was born February 9, 1933, the son of Lester and Helen (Knudsen) Turner. Bruce was born and raised in Council Bluffs where he resided his whole life.

On July 30, 1991, Bruce was united in marriage to Charmaine Warth. He was a volunteer firefighter at Lewis Township Fire Department for 20 years. He enjoyed building airplanes, fishing, and boating around the lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Kevin Turner. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Charmaine Turner of Council Bluffs; many other relatives and friends.

Visitation is 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2023 at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home in Council Bluffs. Memorial Service is 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023 also at the funeral home. Inurnment with Military Honors is in Memorial Park Cemetery in Council Bluffs.

Obituary Preview: Rick (Ricky) Lee Horton, age 71, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born April 13, 1952, and was the son of the late Robert (Paula) Horton and Joyce (Fluke) Horton. He graduated from Osceola High School. Later in life, he attended Iowa Western Community College and received an Associate’s Degree.

Rick was united in marriage to Sharon Rust. To this union, they were blessed with six children. They made their home in Treynor. Rick was highly involved in community youth events; umpiring and coaching baseball with his children was a favorite pastime.

He had a strong love for meteorology, weather, and all things in the sky. Many friends and family referred to him as Radar Rick and Papa Fix ‘it. Rick owned/operated Home & Acres in Treynor for over 25 years. When he wasn’t working, you would find Rick cruising around Treynor, getting ice cream with his dog Maggie, or spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Sharon Horton. He is survived by his children: Autumn Horton (Cheryl); Justin Horton (Kris); Moriah Bees (Dylan); Alyssa Horton (Mark); Nigel Horton (Rachel); Erin Horton (Liz); 12 grandchildren; sister, Vicky Horton; brother, Darren Horton; a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service to follow on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at the Zion Congregational Church in Treynor.

Obituary Preview: Joel Allen, age 87, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023 in Council Bluffs. He was born January 3, 1936, to the late John and Viola (Marburger) Allen in Seguin, Texas.

Lanny graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1995 where he played varsity soccer and baseball. He obtained his Associates Degree from Iowa Western Community College. Lanny then became an electrician working for various companies and his life long friend, Mike Porter. Lanny and Nicole have 2 children, Easton and Marley. He was also a member of First Christian Church.

Obituary Preview: Tom Brown, 61, of Council Bluffs, IA passed away on July 26, 2023 in Clarinda, IA. Tom was born in Holyoke, MA to James and Mary Brown on February 22, 1962.

Tom is preceded in death by his father, James Brown; and brother, Terry Brown.

Tom is survived by daughter, Sydney Brown; mother, Mary Brown; and sister, Traci (Dan) Chorny.

He was born to the late Walter and Goldie (Ladwig) Schuchard in Milbank, South Dakota, on December 1, 1933. Duane proudly served his country and retired after a full career in the United States Navy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Nicholas Gehrig; siblings, Isabell Dammer and Virgil Schuchard.

Duane is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirley Schuchard; children, Teresa (Jeromy) Holeton, Debra (Leroy) Schuchard, Frank Gehrig, Rose Marie Madden, Leon Gehrig, Carol (Mike) Surber, Mary Cothan, and Gloria Benninghoff; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Obituary Preview: Dennis P. Winchester, age 84, passed away July 21, 2023.

He was born August 17, 1938, to the late James and Bernice (Frost) Winchester in Council Bluffs, IA. Dennis graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School with the class of 1956. He proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard and retired from Moore's Heating and Air.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Winchester; sister, Patricia Colby; brothers, James Winchester and John Winchester.

Dennis is survived by his daughter, Denise (Joseph) Belt; son, David Winchester; grandchildren, David Tijerina and Evy Tijerina; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Winchester and Marcia Winchester; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends will meet at Hoy Kilnoski at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 24, 2023, for a procession to Ridgewood Cemetery for a graveside service. The family will direct memorials.

Obituary Preview: Rhonda Sue Vanecek passed away unexpectedly while undergoing open heart surgery on July 20, 2023 at Spring Valley Hospital in Las Vegas. She was 63 years old.

Rhonda, originally from Council Bluffs, Iowa, graduated from Underwood High School in 1978. She attended Hastings College on an art scholarship. She then worked at Mutual of Omaha for several years and at Joslyn Art Museum . Rhonda moved to Las Vegas in 1988 and began a 35 year career in Human Resources. She worked at Bally Technologies for 23 years as a Senior Benefits Manager. She also worked at Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, PDS Gaming and most recently at Mayo Health Systems. She also owned a business, "Rhonda to the Rescue Pet Sitting, LLC".

Rhonda was an artist with many interests and lived life fully. She brought the sunshine and energy into every room. She loved people and animals and always saw the best in everyone. You could say she never met a stranger. Rhonda was a caring and generous person who would give you the shirt off her back, even if it was her last one. She took great pleasure in giving elaborately wrapped gifts.

Survivors include her daughter, Brittney Vanecek of Las Vegas, parents Charles Vanecek of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Beverly Crouter of Omaha, Nebraska, sisters and one brother in law, Glenda Yost of Omaha, Ne, Krystal Hanson of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Lisa Miller (Greg) of Valley, Nebraska. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Celebration of Life will be held on October 21, 2023, special remarks to begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by open visitation until 2:00 p.m. at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home Community Room.

Obituary Preview: Helena "Sami" Ott, age 90, passed away on July 18, 2023 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Helena "Sami" was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania October 21, 1932. She moved to Council Bluffs to be with her only child, daughter Cindy. She was known to all for being happy and making others laugh. Everyone she met was a friend.

Sami was preceded in death by parents, Frank and Helen (Warysz) Wietecha; husband, Richard Ott; and grandson, Shawn Collins.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Collins; former, son-in-law, Tom Collins; brother, Frank Wietecha, Jr.,; sister-in-law, Pat Wietecha and their children; grandson, Ryan Collins; and a great-granddaughter, Rowan Collins.

Obituary Preview: Carolyn Anne Ashman Age 84 of Council Bluffs, IA passed away July 15, 2023. She was born in Council Bluffs on April 8, 1939 to Alfred and Martha (Green) Fiala. Carolyn graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in the class of 1956. She married Harold Ashman on May 17, 1961 in Council Bluffs. They were blessed with a daughter, Elizabeth Rose. Carolyn had a strong faith and loved her church and especially her daughter, Elizabeth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; brother, Franklin Fiala and special friend, Robert Neilson.

He was born October 27, 1935 to Ralph and Helen (Henning) Hensley in Taylor County, Iowa.He grew up in Bedford, Iowa and proudly served his country in the United States Army.Eldon married Linda (Strong) Glassgow on September 27, 1985.He operated a gas station, then drove a semi-truck for many years. He enjoyed fishing, classic cars, and watching NASCAR and westerns. Eldon loved to tell jokes and had a great sense of humor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Billy; granddaughter, Tiffany Craig; brothers, Don, Jim, and Dean; and sisters, Bonnie and Phyllis.

Obituary Preview: Jeremy Michael Sinnott passed away unexpectedly at his residence on July 9, 2023.

He was born September 17, 1984 in Omaha, Nebraska to LeAnn (Carter) and John Sinnott. Jeremy was an avid football fan - he enjoyed playing Madden football on PlayStation and was always cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Buffalo Bills during football season. He was a proud uncle who cherished every minute he spent with his nephew.

Jeremy is preceded in death by grandma, Linda Kohl; grandparents, Bill and Vera Sinnott; and grandparents, Cork and Connie Carter.

He is survived by his significant other Joyce House and their 4 fur babies; mother, LeAnn (Tim) Carter; father, John (Kendra) Sinnott; sisters, Natasha Carter and Jordan Sinnott; brother, Jason Sinnott; grandfather, Jerry Kohl; nephew, Noah Kenny; aunts; uncles; cousins; and a host of many other family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13, 2023. Interment will be in the Garner Township Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Riley Denisse, age 22, passed away July 9, 2023. He was born August 3, 2000 in North Platte, NE.

Riley had a tremendous love for music, art, riding motorcycles, skateboarding, shooting guns, hunting, fishing and anything outdoors.

Riley was always happy, his smile was contagious, he was the sweetest young man on the planet and when he walked in, he would light up the entire room. There wasn't an "I Love You" left unsaid with him.

He had a strong passion for life and he had the biggest heart of anyone I have ever known.

Riley would do absolutely anything for anyone and his biggest love was his family and friends.

He also had a quote that he loved to use and he would always tell you to "follow your feet".

He is preceded in death by, his great grandparents, Loren & Irene Mueller, Wilfred Deines and Shelton Denisse.

Riley is survived by his parents, Heath & Lindsey Denisse; brother, Austin Denisse; sister, Ellie Denisse; grandparents, Steve & Linda Mueller, Dan Denisse,Yolanda Denisse; Uncle & Aunt, Lee & Kasey Mueller; cousin: Addy Mueller; and a host of other family and friends.

Visitation is Friday, July 21, 2023, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. The family will direct memorials in Riley's honor.

Obituary Preview: Louis "Sonny" Toelle passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2023. He was born on April 18, 1946 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He continued to live in the Crescent and Council Bluffs areas until knee surgery. At that time, he came to reside with his sister, Sherry Toelle, in Atlantic, Iowa. His health continued to deteriorate. In the fall of 2022, he was placed in out-of-home care through the Veteran's program in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Sonny was a graduate of Holy Family Elementary School and Creighton Prep High School. He planned to attend Iowa State University in the Veterinary Program, but a riding accident with his horse impeded that plan. Sonny later attended Iowa Western College, earning an Associate of Arts degree. During his career, he worked at the U.S. Post Office.

Sonny loved animals, especially horses and dogs. He served his country during the Vietnam conflict. While serving he worked in surgery at Landstul, Germany.

Sonny is preceded in death by his parents, Louis Henry and Katherine (Coyle); a stillborn sister, Kathleen (Yvonne); and an older sister, LouAnn Drake.

He is survived by his younger sister, Sherry; numerous nieces; and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Friday, July 14, 2023.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Friday, July 14, 2023. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Rhodora H. Stokes, age 88, passed away at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital on July 8, 2023.

She was born August 14, 1934, to the late Walter and Mary (Rhodus) Rose in Winnebago, NE.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Carol Stokes; sons, Jeff and Brent Stokes; sister, Virginia McGhee; brother, Calvin Rose.

Rhodora is survived by daughter, Rhonda (Jeff) Ervin; son, Marty Stokes; sister, Charlotte Beltz; daughters-in-law, Marian Bretey and Sheri Hiller; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, 104 North Taft Walthill, Nebraska on Friday, July 14, 2023.

Interment is in Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill, Nebraska.
