Hello. I just bought a new p.c. running Windows 10. I have an old (ca. 2001) DVD of Adobe Illustrator 10.
Can I re-install it on my new computer and expect it to run? It did fine on Windows XP.
Related question: does Adobe even offer any more software that is installed on the hard drive? It looks like
everything now is a cloud subscription.

10 can only be installed and run in XP Mode as part of a Virtual Machine, but it is possible.
Even though CC is a subscription version, it is installed on your PC and it can run (much of the time) without connexion to the internet.

10 can only be installed and run in XP Mode as part of a Virtual Machine, but it is possible.
Even though CC is a subscription version, it is installed on your PC and it can run (much of the time) without connexion to the internet.

Do you have it installed, Jacob?
Because if you don't have it or have it seen running, this would be a dangerous advice.
So many people have problems even running version CS2 or CS5 on Windows 10.

Jacob, Monika, thanks for fast replies. I will probably not try to re-install on my new p.c.
Does the subscription service not require monthly payments? What concerns me is that I am now retired and would not use a CAD program with regularity. There may be several months when I would not use it. Monthly fees would just not be cost effective.

Illustrator is not a CAD program.
The subscription will be paid monthly. There might be possibilities to pay in once a year when you buy it through a reseller. But when you stop the payments, you have a grace period and afterwards you cannot use the software.

It's a vector drawing application.
It lacks essential functionality a CAD program does have. Such as measuring.

There are different kinds of drawing program. Illustrator is designed for use by illustrators (artists). CAD programs are designed for use mainly for technical work, such as drawings used in machine design or architecture. There is some crossover But before investing be sure you understand what meets your needs.
Illustrator is available for about $20/month with a commitment to pay for a year, or $30/month with cancel any time.

I've used Illustrator since about 1990 and it met my needs. But those were one-time purchases which resided on my p.c's. Now being retired, I can't justify monthly payments for many months when I won't even use it. I'll look for a simple free drawing program.

I fail to see anything dangerous in trying to get Illy back and even enjoying her face so you can really talk to her while you work.
It is a bit of a roundabout way, but the Virtual Machine/XP Mode functions as a complete OS (Operating System) created in a closed environment consisting of a part of your (main) harddisk, so if things are less than satisfactory (just to mention a few possible issues, it is important that you connect the PC to the network (if you have one) before installing the Virtual Machine/XP Mode because it may otherwise be impossible for the applications in the XP Mode to access and draw upon files/printers/whatever on the other PC(s).
And if you decide to quit or give up, everything within the Virtual Machine/XP Mode will be wiped out, nothing lingering.
The usual, and dangerous, issue is at the top end where CC may wreck whatever went before.
In the choice of what to do, it may be important whether you wish to be able to work on your old .ai documents, which is obviously easier if you just go on (this applies to a comparison with newer AI versions also).

Jacob: thanks for the useful advice. I looked into a Virtual Machine for my new o.s., and quickly learned that I would need to have media to install the o.s. of choice (Windows XP). Which I don't have. The o.s. came installed on my previous p.c., a Lenovo, and I never had installation media for it. So guess I'll just learn to get along without Illy, as you call her. Jim

Failing that, you may try this, although it is a reepetitive procedure, once a month, which may be too tiresome.
How to add an XP Mode Virtual Machine to Windows 10 (or 8) using Hyper-V
Unfortunately, the good old backwards compatibility of Windows seems to be slipping these years.

Jacob: the Bleeping Computer technique, of setting the properties of A.I. to "run as Windows XP", worked. FANTASTIC, thanks man. Unfortunately it doesn't work for my scanner, but I was thinking of getting a newer one one, anyway. Now if it just works for my Paintshop Pro...oddly, my Canon printer (also old) hooked right up and works fine, so it's hit and miss.
