ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First)—After days of interruptions and dry faucets, Atlanta’s water service has been fully restored, the city announced Wednesday morning.

Since Friday, Atlanta has been battling several water main breaks, which impacted water service and kicked off a water boil advisory. The advisory is still in effect out of an abundance of caution.

Here is everything we know about the situation.

>> VIEW INTERACTIVE BOIL WATER ADVISORY MAP HERE

There were two major water main breaks and a handful of smaller ones.

The first was on Friday morning at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW and James P. Brawley Drive. The pipe carries a large amount of water through the city and broke due to age-related decay and corrosion, according to Atlanta Watershed Commissioner Al Wiggins Jr.

The department said Saturday evening that the broken main had been repaired. The water system then had to be repressurized slowly to prevent further issues with the system.

The second broken main was on Friday night at the intersection of 11th Street and West Peachtree Street NW. It was repaired as of Wednesday morning.

Officials said the two major water main breaks are not related.

Crews have also been called out to address a few smaller breaks, including those on Atlantic Drive NW, Beechwood Drive NW and Havenridge Drive NW.

The water main breaks affected several homes, office buildings, businesses and other public infrastructure.

On Friday, government buildings like the Georgia State Capitol, the Georgia Supreme Court and Atlanta City Hall were without water. Downtown Atlanta mainstays like the Georgia Aquarium, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, World of Coca-Cola and College Football Hall of Fame also closed.

Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown reported low water pressure and a water shortage, but service has since been restored, according to Wiggins Jr. Both hospitals were operating normally by Monday.

The water shortages even canceled State Farm Arena concerts by the ever-popular Megan Thee Stallion.

On Saturday night, Mayor Andre Dickens declared a state of emergency for Atlanta. Dickens said the declaration will allow the city to “access resources in an expedited fashion.”

Currently, yes.

Initially, there was a boil water advisory for many parts of Atlanta. On Saturday afternoon, officials extended the advisory into part of Midtown, which remains under effect.

On Monday night, the boil water advisory was lifted for the area affected by the initial water main break, including Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive.

Wednesday, June 5

9:45 a.m. | Mayor Andre Dickens and city officials speak:

While the water is back on, the boil water advisory isn’t expected to be lifted for another 18 hours.

Atlanta Watershed Commissioner Al Wiggins Jr. said the shutoff valve was directly under the water main break on West Peachtree Street and 11th Street, which prevented crews from seeing and using it. That’s when crews manually plugged pipes at three different locations to stop the water and make repairs.

Now, officials are working on preventing future breaks. Wiggins Jr. said the city will plant more than 20 new AI-powered devices designed to detect leaks across the water system in Midtown as of next week. The city is also working with the Army Corps of Engineers to come up with a city-wide water strategy.

“Our residents should not be worried at all,” Wiggins Jr. said. “This is a unique set of circ*mstances, and we want everyone to feel comfortable that we have the situation under control.”

The mayor apologized again for the city’s lack of communication during the first 24 hours as the water mains broke.

“We were looking for the moment to say, ‘It’s all done. It’s gonna be OK,’” Dickens said while dusting his hands off. “We learned that. We won’t learn it again.”

He also spoke of a $5 million recovery fund to help businesses impacted by water main breaks. Dickens said more details on the fund will be released soon.

9:39 a.m. | Crews have turned off and are repairing a 12-inch main near 2323 Piedmont Avenue NE due to a break. The outage is impacting one apartment complex and one fire hydrant.

12:28 p.m. | In an update around noon Sunday, the Department of Watershed Management said crews continue to repair the broken water main at the intersection of West Peachtree Street and 11th Street in Midtown.

“They have made significant progress in localizing the repairs,” the department wrote. “There have been no water service disruptions, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to prevent such disruptions for residents in the area. Traffic control measures remain in place, so motorists and pedestrians are strongly advised to avoid the area.”

“Out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with Georgia EPD (Environmental Protection Division) guidance, the boil water advisory remains in effect for residents and businesses in the impacted areas,” the department continued.

The department said after the broken water main at Joseph E. Boone Blvd and J.P. Brawley Dr. was repaired Saturday, water service was fully restored to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Fulton County Jail, Atlanta City Detention Center and “many of Atlanta’s critical facilities, and residents, including several senior high-rise buildings.”

The department added: “Additionally, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena now have water service, and scheduled events will occur as planned.”

The department said it will follow its line flushing protocols for the system as a precaution. It’s begun sampling the affected zones in the Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive area to confirm no contamination.

They said the Georgia Environmental Protection Division will advise the department on when the boil water advisory can be lifted.

“If you are an Atlanta resident in need of water, please visit one of six designated AFRD fire stations: • Station 1 – 71 Elliott Street • Station 2 – 1568 Jonesboro Rd. • Station 10 – 447 Boulevard • Station 11 – 165 16th St. • Station 15 – 170 10th St. • Station 16 – 1048 Joseph E. The World of Coca-Cola is also open today. The museum said that while the area is under a boil water advisory, the Taste It! and Beverage Lab tasting experiences are not in operation. The Georgia Aquarium is open as scheduled. Guests with tickets for May 31 or June 1 may exchange them to visit Sunday, June 2

10:22 a.m. | Watershed Management is offering some helpful tips to anyone who may be experiencing water discoloration.

The department said: “While the water is safe to use for cooking and cleaning, DWM recommends not drinking or doing laundry until the water is clear as clothes can become stained.

“Flushing the cold water pipes in your home or business usually clears up the discolored water and will allow trapped air to be released. After water main repair work is completed in your area, follow these steps to flush the cold-water lines in your home or business.

Run cold water taps for about five minutes or until the water runs clear.

  • Begin with the lowest faucet in your home or business and then open the other faucets one at a time, moving from your lowest floor to your highest.
  • Once the water runs clear, usually in five minutes or less, turn off your faucets in the same order, lowest to highest.
  • You should also flush your refrigerator’s water lines.
