Position Overview

The Campus Architecture Officein Facilities Developmentis currently seeking a Full-timeJunior Interior Designer

The Campus Architecture office, working with other stakeholders on campus and in related industries, develops and maintains the University of Calgary Design Standards, is responsible for the Long Range Development Plan, the Landscape Master Plan, and directs architectural consulting teams in the execution of projects on campus. The primary purpose of the position is to be a professional resource for large and small campus-wide projects that involve the provision of in-house interior design, programming, and space planning services. This position offers hands on support to the larger Campus Architecture (CA) and Campus Planning (CP) teams involving a range of activities.

This position reports to the Senior Interior Designer and provides space planning, programming, design, detailing, and constructability support to the facility development team.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Prepare and participate in programming efforts, in conjunction with senior staff.
  • Assist senior staff in providing interior design and layout plans for occupants who are renovating, requesting additional space, being moved, etc.
  • Participate in project meetings to discuss and develop design solutions that meet occupants requests / requirements.
  • Confirm preliminary space plans and design concepts are safe, functional, aesthetically appropriate, and meet University Design Standards and comply with ABC.
  • Compile selection and specification of furniture, fixtures, equipment, and millwork; including layout drawings and detailed product description. Provide tracking and measuring services as required.
  • Compile selection of colors, materials and finishes to appropriately convey the concept and to meet socio-psychological, functional, maintenance, life-cycle performance, environmental and safety requirements, while complying with University Design standards.
  • Assist with site verifications, field surveys, and punch walks.
  • Modify drawings to incorporate design and technical changes.
  • Formulate preliminary space plans and sketches that integrate occupant's requests / requirements.
  • Organize and update sample libraries.
  • Assist with authoring/administrating RFP documents.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A degree in Interior Design from a CIDA accredited institution.
  • 3 years of experience working in the design industry.
  • A demonstrated understanding of design standards and practices within the interior design and architectural professions are requirements of the position.
  • Hand sketching ability is desirable.
  • Ability to read and understand construction documents.
  • Ability to think critically, synthesize information, and offer innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Contract administration experience would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with LEED Version
  • Strong written, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good working knowledge of:
    • Microsoft suite including Word, Planner, SharePoint, Excel, and Power BI.
    • AutoCAD;
    • Sketch-up or Revit to develop models
    • InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
    • Experience in REVIT would be an asset
  • Strong Graphic Design skills
  • Ability to translate conceptual designs into architectural renderings for promotional purposes.
  • Manage a high volume of complex work within multiple project deadlines.
  • Ability to create construction drawings in CAD and review drawings for accuracy and design intent.
  • A demonstrated ability as a communicator with effective listening and negotiating skills.
  • Organized and self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to share information in an effective and collaborative manner.
  • Ability to adapt and respond to the changing environment and to constructively create opportunities for change through active participation.
  • Ability to be creative, challenge and demonstrate initiative to generate improvements and foster positive outcomes.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in technical and job knowledge aspects of the position to achieve a high level of performance. An ability and desire to continuously learn.
  • Ability to function effectively in team situations both within and across departments and other organizations to achieve optimal collective results.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
