However, there is a clever trick known as the '5-minute rule' that can give a good idea. The way this works is quite simple: from three months of age, you allow five minutes of exercise for each month the puppy is old.

Your average Labrador would enjoy around 1 to 2 hours of exercise a day, but this can be divided into manageable time slots. Exercise also includes brain stimulation, such as training and scent work. So your morning and evening walks can be supplemented with training sessions at home, too.

Female lab retrievers engage less than their male counterparts. While both male and female labradors are generally friendly and outgoing, female labradors are more reserved and independent. They do not enjoy new people as much and take longer to warm up to strangers.

Almost two centuries later, the Labrador is almost as much of a British icon as the Royal family, who have been keen lab owners. The late Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III, Prince William and Harry and Meghan have all been known to have owned Labradors.

The Greyador is a hybrid breed where the graceful Greyhound is crossed with the athletic Labrador Retriever. Tall and slender, your Greyador may have the outstanding speed of his Greyhound parent, who has the ability to run 40 miles per hour. Lovable and strong, the Labrador Retriever will add power to the mix.

Properly conditioned, medium-to-large sized active dogs, such as Labradors and Golden Retrievers, can hike up to 20 miles a day. Smaller dog breeds will benefit from a reduced speed and shorter walks to keep them safe.

A full workday may be too much for Labs, who crave companionship and need plenty of exercise, but an easygoing Lab can usually manage about six hours alone.

Take a new approach to exercise

While there may be subtle differences in the male and female Lab, overall, these two sexes share the intelligence, gentleness, and friendliness that Labradors are known for. If you want a playful and goofy companion that acts as a guard dog, you may prefer a male.
